Americanism & Bridge of Light Programs

Olympic No. 539 is proud to offer the following programs to Schools and organizations on Washington's Olympic Peninsula:

Building of the Flag of the United States of America

This 22 minute program, seen here being presented to students at Port Townsend, Washington traces the history of the United States of America for adoption of the Flag of the United States in 1777 to the present day.  The program consists of an introduction narrative, an oration that chronicles the evolution of our flag from the first stripe to the 50th star, and a monologue entitled "Old Glory Speaks"

Old Glory Speaks

This four-minute portion of the Building of the Flag can be used alone where a brief history of the United States of America is desired as part of a meeting or ceremony and is usually performed to close a patriotic event, or can be used at large public events where the entire program is inappropriate due to length or visibility.

Toast to the Flag

This short four-minute Toast to the Flag of the United States of America is suitable for public events where the Flag of the United States of America is displayed and is typically performed immediately prior to banquets, formal dinners, adult or older youth group meetings, or public events usually immediately following the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Disposal of the Flag of the United States of America

Routine disposal of the Flag of the United States of America is performed by the American Legion.  The Heroes of '76 of the National Sojourners will dispose of a single flag, used by an organization, and for which the history is known in a ceremonial manner.  This is a ten minute ceremony in which the flag is honored for the service performed and ritually retired by burning.

The organization requesting the ceremony must provide an adequate outdoor space, a hot wood fire without accelerants, a fire permit when required, and sufficient safety equipment.  The ceremony will not be performed in the event of no-burn conditions or in high winds.
